Charting a Sustainable Future: Horizon Europe

AlgaeProBanos primarily relies on funding from Horizon Europe, the European Union's flagship research and innovation program, which succeeded Horizon 2020. With a substantial budget exceeding €95.5 billion, Horizon Europe aims to catalyze breakthroughs, discoveries, and leading-edge technologies to spur economic growth and tackle societal challenges.

Spanning diverse sectors like health, climate change, and digital transformation, the program supports a wide array of research and innovation endeavors. Whether delving into algae exploration or crafting sustainable energy solutions, Horizon Europe offers avenues to advance innovative ideas.

Horizon Europe and Mission Ocean

As part of Horizon Europe, five Missions have been established as strategic initiatives to address specific societal challenges. The AlgaeProBanos project falls under the purview of the EU Mission Ocean.

The EU Mission "Restore our Ocean and Waters" targets safeguarding and improving the health of oceans and waters by 2030. This initiative leverages research, innovation, citizen engagement, and strategic investments in marine resources, adopting a holistic approach that acknowledges the interconnectedness of oceans and water bodies. It plays a crucial role in achieving climate neutrality and ecological restoration.

Key to this effort are cross-cutting measures such as widespread public involvement and the creation of a digital platform, Digital Twin Ocean, to consolidate knowledge about oceans and water bodies.

The Mission encourages regional cooperation through designated "lighthouses" situated in major marine and river basins: the Atlantic-Arctic, Mediterranean, Baltic-North Sea, and Danube-Black Sea regions. These lighthouses act as focal points for testing, showcasing, refining, and implementing Mission initiatives across European waterways and coastal regions.
