What is The Algae Accelerator?

The Algae Accelerator is a six-month mentorship programme designed to support startups and SMEs in the algae value chain to upscale their business strategies. The initiative aims to introduce new, sustainable alternatives to the market, addressing some of our ocean’s key challenges by boosting the development and uptake of innovative algae-based products.

For participants 

The Algae Accelerator supports startups and SMEs by enhancing their capacity and fostering connections with experienced talents to help them achieve their goals and address challenges. We focus on those with innovative ideas for bio-based solutions and offer access to international mentors with practical expertise in the blue biotech industry and beyond. 

For Mentors

Are you a seasoned business professional, sustainability pro, startup mentor, EU legislation expert, or something completely else? Your expertise is valued! Become a mentor with the Algae Accelerator.

Through the programme, mentors can share their practical expertise in the blue biotech industry, helping start-ups and SMEs to shape and support the next generation of algae entrepreneurs. Mentors will also have the chance to connect with a global network of like-minded professionals, contributing to the growth and success of the blue economy industry. The Algae Accelerator programme compensates mentors for their support with a contribution of €10,000.

For Applicants

Who is eligible to apply?
Single SMEs or startups, or consortia of such entities, established in countries participating in the Horizon Europe Program.

What support does the program offer?
Access to tailored mentoring and an innovation voucher worth up to €10,000 for services like training and market insights. Note: This is not direct financial support.

What are the key dates for Open Call 1?
Applications are open from October 11, 2024, to December 20, 2024, at 17:00 CET.

How can I apply?
Submit your application through the F6S platform. Detailed guidelines and necessary annexes are available on this page.

What are the obligations of selected participants?
Actively engage in the mentoring program, achieve defined objectives, and contribute to surveys

For Mentors

Who can be a mentor?
Experts in their field from business, sustainability, EU regulations, market strategies, or algae technologies.

What is the timeline?
Applications close on December 31, 2024. Matchmaking follows, and the program is divided into three 2-month sprints.

What does mentoring involve?

  • At least 24 hours of contact over six months.
  • Supporting startups with strategy, testing, and market readiness.
  • Achieving goals defined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Is mentoring paid?
Yes, mentors receive a €10,000 compensation paid by the program coordinator.
